Benefits of Butterfly Pea (Clitoria Ternatea)

Butterfly Pea Flower, or Clitoria ternatea by its scientific name, is a plant most commonly grown in South East Asia. Traditional ancient communities have used this plant for centuries as a tea for its strong antioxidants and health benefits, as well as topically for its beautifying and healing properties.

Butterfly pea tea's unprecedented oxidizing, thyroid (butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck) boosting nootropic effects on the body and mind. Indications are that high doses of Butterfly Pea may be adaptogenic – helping the body deal with stressors.

Butterfly Pea has been shown to enhance cognitive function and boost brain function. It is also known to refresh the brain, bolster energy levels and stamina, influence positive emotions and thereby increase productivity at work.

This flower is beautiful and full of endless creative possibilities when making use of its unique qualities. On top of that, it is steeped in health benefits, symbolism, and history.

Traditionally, the Butterfly pea flower is said to be ruled by the planet Venus and Neptune connecting to the element of water. Giving it the attributes of love, emotion, serenity, and protection. In India, this flower is named after Hindu goddess, Aparajita, meaning one who cannot be conquered or defeated.

In Thailand, this drink is called Anchan tea. Thai folklore tells us that a woman named Isra was taken on an adventure by a half woman half bird creature, called a kinnari. The kinnari showed her these flowers and instructed her to grow them and use them for healing. It is also common to use the Butterfly Pea flower in Thai and Malaysian cuisine to bring the blue color to dishes like desserts and sticky rice. This flower is rich in history and myth, but has gained worldwide popularity mainly for its color changing properties.

Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea)

Blue Lotus tea is made from the blue lily flower, botanically known as Nelumbo nucifera. The blue water lily has a beautiful flower with an intoxicating fragrance that has been used in herbal remedies since the ancient Egyptians, Thais, and Syrians.

The ancient Egyptians used the blue lotus flower in their celebrations, including in the form of blue lotus wine. It is closely associated with the Egyptian god Ra, the Sun God, due to its sun-loving activity. Flower petals open with the first light, blossoms follow the sun's arc throughout the day, and blooms finally close at sundown.

The blue lily is a water-growing plant that floats on the surface while its roots penetrate deep into the earth. The plant blooms during the day and dies at night. The sacred flower has been linked to psychedelic effects and lucid dreaming, lending to its modern uses as a mind-altering drink.

The flower is said to be soothing and tranquilizing in folk medicine. It has been used historically for detoxification, aphrodisiac purposes, and astringent and diuretic properties.

The flower  is commonly consumed as a tea, tincture, or as a smokeable herb.
